Weekly Announcements

New Announcements for Jan 20:

Club this week is Round 3 of the Velociraptor Junior.  Same time, place, and routine as the last two weeks.  Thank you EVERYONE for making it run so smoothly!  Please continue to let me know in advance if you will NOT be there, or text me if you are running late and want to be paired.
Standings after Round 2 are attached posted online.
LADDER NOTE:  IMPORTANT.  If your child cannot stay for the ladder games, please shoot me a note and tell me IN ADVANCE.  Everyone has been great about going back to the ladder upon arrival and telling Amy; however, the problem is that your child may have already been challenged to a game, and this requires Amy to have to try to find other challenges for the kids that fit within our ladder rules.  If we know in advance that in a particular week, for example, your child has a major school project / a lot of homework and can’t stay for that last part of the night, Amy will know not to allow them to be challenged from the time kids start arriving.  Please make a note to do this every week that you will leave early.  Just tell ME, and I’ll pass the list on to Amy.
Back to the ongoing tournament… And so the cat is out of the bag, as the kids were in awe of the display on Tuesday — the trophies for the top three in each section are pictured in the attachments.  If you have been with us for a while, you’re probably thinking wuh????? (Because we normally do just small gold, silver, and bronze cups for the winners of our “in house” tournaments, as the purpose of these “in house” events is for experience and ratings, not big prizes — go play on a Saturday for the bigger trophies!).  And if you are new, don’t get used to it.  There was shall we say a miscommunication, or rather a faulty assumption on my part, that the trophies the designer described to me and ordered were normal single column trophies with a dinosaur affixed to the top… Not triple-posted behemoths worthy of a State Championship.  🙂  The dinosaurs did more than bite their pawns bloody — they took a nice little bite out of our budget.  No worries, the designer has promised a corporate donation later in the year haha.  But if anyone would like to chip in a donation to HRSCC to help cover the cost of these trophies that the kids are flipping out over, please shoot us a family and friends PayPal with a note that it’s a donation for the dinosaur trophies, or see Cheryl at club to make a donation.  Anything helps, even $5.  If you can’t swing it, no worries, we can cover it, and we will recover lol.
Note that other prizes have been ordered and include fun dinosaur toys and books similar to what we did for the last Bughouse tournament.  The trophies will not be on display again until we award them the week after the tournament ends, as the kids were thrilled with the fact that the dinosaurs move, and we don’t want the glue to come undone.
On a final note, as of this afternoon, there were 123 people registered for the 1 February tournament.  Julie and I are working to expand capacity for the K-12 Open section, which is already over-enrolled.  Chess parents are notorious for procrastinating.  We’ve grown chess too much in Hampton Roads for you to be able to register at the last minute or show up on site.  Our facility only holds a certain number of kids for tournaments.  From this point forward, you register early (apparently 2 weeks early), or you don’t play.  If you have any intention of playing on February 1st, get registered RIGHT NOW.  …AND PAID (no more paying on site, as you will be bumped by a pre-paid entry if we are full).
See you Tuesday!
VOLUNTEER REMINDER:  Each family is REQUIRED to volunteer 9 times / 9 hours during the school year.  There are 40 families who have not yet volunteered in September.  Pay attention to those e-mails that come from Sign-up Genius.  There are also links on our Facebook page and website.  Sign up for a job, check in for the job, and get credit!

Inclement Weather Policy

HRSCC follows the guidance of Virginia Beach City Public Schools for cancellations.  If school is cancelled or released early, or if after school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather, HRSCC will be cancelled that day.

Standing Announcements:

Please continue to sign up to Volunteer (once per month required).  Use the link pinned to the top of the Facebook page or from the Volunteer tab on the HRSCC dropdown menu to sign up in advance.  Our volunteer coordinator is logging your hours for the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards (adults and kids).  If you would like to submit retroactive hours, please see Amy Nichols at club.

It is imperative that you let Coach Tina know in advance if you will NOT be at club.  This allows us to enter Byes in advance and know how many board numbers to lay out, saving time and allowing us to run each club meeting smoothly.  E-Mail prior to 4 PM on Tuesdays if possible.  Last minute absences (e.g. child comes home sick from school, car breaks down, impossible traffic, etc.) should be texted to 757-535-3880 prior to 5:30 PM, as should planned late arrivals.  Rounds will start between 6 and 6:15 PM weekly, so if you can guarantee arrival by 6, you will be paired (but you will miss training).  If you are a “no show” (absent with no notice), you will receive a zero point bye for that night’s round.  If your absence is known in advance, you are entitled to one half point bye per tournament.  Subsequent absences will receive a zero point bye for the same tournament.  Despite these pleas, we continue to have a few no-shows each week.

Chess Bucks:  Chess bucks (which replaced tickets) are awarded at check-in for ChessKid usage, tournament attendance, homework, etc.  See the Weekly Homework tab on the HRSCC dropdown menu for your assignments!   The chess store will be open each week for you to purchase items with your chess bucks.
