Section 2: Rules of the Game

In this section, which contains the longest video in the course, FM Morefield goes over the rules of chess: how to set up the board, how to move the pieces, how notation works, what castling and en passant are, and how to end the game.

Additional note: Although it is not strictly necessary, a lot of players find a point system useful: by rating a pawn as one point, a bishop or knight as three points, a rook as five points, and a queen as nine points, it can be easier to figure out who’s ahead in material. This is often accurate, but not all the time: for example, a bad rook can often be worth less than a good bishop.
