HRCA COVID-19 MASK POLICY AS OF 2/16/2022***
On February 16, 2022, the Governor of Virginia signed a bill into law making masks optional for all public schools in the state.  The law takes effect immediately, but schools have until 1 March if necessary to implement changes.  While HRCA is a private non-profit and not covered by this law, we have always considered school policies, state and federal laws, and CDC and state health department guidelines in making decisions about our COVID-19 policies.  At this time, HRCA has carefully considered trends, medical advancements, guidelines, and laws, and has determined that effective immediately, masks are optional at the Peninsula Satellite Club in Hampton, the Hampton Roads Chess Club (adult/advanced youth tournament club on Tuesday nights) in Virginia Beach, and at any upcoming special events, workshops, and tournaments run by HRCA.  For our youth programs that run in 12-week blocks Fall-Winter-Spring-Summer, masks remain mandatory until the completion of the winter session, as we feel that families should be able to complete the program they signed up for under the mask mandate.  Effective the start of spring session on March 21, 2022, masks will be optional at Hampton Roads Scholastic Chess Club (Tuesday night youth tournament club) and all weeknight classes run at the Mid-Atlantic Chess Center.  School chess programs will adopt whatever policy is in place at the school.  HRCA will provide tournament accommodations to high-risk players by way of an assigned board away from the main playing hall as much as possible, where both players will be required to wear a mask for that round. While we strongly encourage students to attend classes in person, most of our classes will retain the option to Zoom in, particularly for high-risk students. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging transition!

Our club is open to players of all ages and skill levels.  We have casual chess, USCF rated tournament chess, and occasional other activities.

Click to follow the club on Facebook.

We meet on Tuesdays from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Registration is from 7:00 to 7:30.  Note that children from HRSCC may still be on site until 7:15.  Most tournaments start at 7:30

The club is free to attend for casual play; however, after a limited number of visits, regular players will be required to join HRCA, which is just $10/year. The tournaments have low entry fees, and many have prizes. Almost all our tournaments require USCF membership.  HRCA is happy to process your membership for you, as we receive a commission.

The club has many sets, boards, and clocks. It is not necessary to bring your own equipment unless you prefer your personal set and clock.

We also have an on-line club at Chess.com.  Go to our   HRCC on-line play  page to learn about the club and how to play.
