TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

The four-round tournament is open to players of all ages and abilities.  This is not an elimination event.  You will play all four rounds.  Late walk-ups will be paired for the next available round and are asked to complete the tournament if possible.  Please let a Tournament Director know if you need to withdraw.

Boards, sets, and some clocks will be provided.  Each player will have 25 minutes to complete all of his or her moves, with a 3 second grace period for each move (if you make your move in 3 seconds or less, no time will be deducted from your clock)(G/25; d3).  For US Chess members, this is a Quick Rated only event.

You may choose from one of the following sections to enter the tournament:

Junior Rookie:  Open to players in grades Pre-K through 8th who have never received a US Chess rating.  US Chess membership is not required for this section.  This section is appropriate for Beginner Youth with little to no tournament experience.

Senior Rookie:  Open to players in grades 9-12 and Adults who have never received a US Chess rating.  US Chess membership is not required for this section.  This section is appropriate for Beginner / Casual Player High School students and adults with little to no tournament experience.

All Ages Novice:  Open to players of all ages who have a US Chess rating of Under 600 (U600), or unrated players who wish to receive their first rating at this event.  Very strong casual adult players who are yet unrated but wish to attain a rating are encouraged to play in the Senior Champion section instead.  US Chess membership is required for this section.

Junior Champion:  Open to players in grades Pre-K through 12 of any rating.  Unrated players who wish to attain their first rating are welcome (Beginners desiring a rating should try their hand at Junior Novice.  Strong casual players, especially older youth, may wish to enter the Junior Champion section). Players rated Under 600 but seeking stronger competition are welcome to enter this section.  US Chess membership is required for this section.

Senior Champion:  Open to players of all ages of any rating.  Unrated players welcome — recommended only for very strong casual adult players who wish to attain their first rating.  This section generally attracts adult players and strong (1200+ US Chess rating) youth players.

OTHER EVENT INFORMATION

This event is generously sponsored by Beach Events / City of Virginia Beach.  All proceeds benefit Hampton Roads Chess Association, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to bringing the game of chess to people of all ages and abilities.

Entry fee is $10 for the tournament ($5 if playing only in the afternoon rounds) and $5 for the Simultaneous Exhibition.  Cash, checks, and credit cards welcome.

Take-all-comers Blitz, Big Board, Chess Lessons, Casual Chess, and Chess Variations are all Free activities.

The term “Simultaneous Exhibition” or “Simul” for short means a single player (usually a Master) takes on multiple players at one time, walking from board to board to make his or her move.  Players wait to make their move until the “Exhibitor” is standing back in front of their board.

Tournament awards include Trophies to the top five players in each category, and special event medals to all other players.

This is an outdoor event.  Please prepare appropriately and dress for the weather.  The event location tends to have a wind tunnel effect, so it can be chilly even on a warmer day.  Bring a camp chair for seating during breaks.

You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the lunch break to check out the awesome local restaurants in Town Center!!!
