HRCA supports a large number of homeschooling families in Hampton Roads! Many of our staff are also experienced homeschoolers, so we know how important quality programming and cost are to you. HRCA offers chess programs through homeschool co-ops and our own Homeschool Chess Club on Friday mornings. The cost to participate at HRCA is among the cheapest homeschooling offerings available – only $7.50/week per student for homeschool chess AND you get access to the #1 chess website for kids at almost 70% off retail!
Homeschool Co-Ops
Homeschool co-ops may contact us to inquire about adding chess to their vast offerings! As with other school chess programs, HRCA utilizes certified, trained, and background-checked coaches to teach. We are fully equipped to teach, supervise casual play clubs, and run tournaments. When you choose HRCA, you can trust that you are getting quality programming through a vetted US Chess Federation Affiliate, award-winning staff, and some of the best chess players Hampton Roads has to offer!
Friday Homeschool Chess Club
HRCA Homeschool Club will have a full Fall and Spring semester for 2024-2025!
This is a casual club hosted by HRCA (no rec center membership is required). A certified HRCA chess coach will be onsite, but there will not be formal instruction, as HRCA also teaches beginner and intermediate chess at Kempsville Recreation Center as part of the City’s recreation programming. Knowledge of chess basics or enrollment in a beginner chess class is a requirement to participate.
(Looking for Beginner/Learn to Play classes? We have those starting in January!)
Homeschoolers ages 4 – teens who already know the basics of chess, or are enrolled in or Learn to Play/Beginner class.
Kempsville Recreation Center 800 Monmouth Lane Virginia Beach, VA
Friday mornings 9:30-10:30am. Each semester is 12 weeks long.
Fall Session dates are September 9 – December 6th. (No meetings on 11/15 or 11/29)
Winter Session dates are January 10 – April 4, 2025 (No meeting 3/21)
We know that finding quality enrichment activities for homeschoolers can be expensive. We charge the same tuition as our school-based programs — only $7.50 per student per week — and also offer free monthly payment plans.
The cost for a 12-week session of homeschool chess is only $90/semester (+$25 registration fee for NEW students.) The non-refundable Annual Registration Fee includes HRCA membership through 8/31 and a ChessKid Gold premium online subscription (a $70 value!). Returning homeschool chess students from Fall session or those already paid an HRCA registration fee through another program do not pay registration fee again this school year!
If a monthly payment plan is requested, parents may use our Financial Aid application (below) to request three monthly installments of $30 (Jan-Mar) prior to December 24th. HRCA Tuition is billed via autopay to account on file the 1st of the month, beginning on January 1st.
HRCA requires autopay for tuition and registration fees. HRCA charges the non-refundable $25 Annual Registration Fee (if applicable) to the account on file within 72 hours of sign enrollment, unless already paid via the Parent/Student Portal. It is a one-time yearly fee across all HRCA programs, so you will not pay it again if you have already paid it through a different class/club.
Tuition is posted to your Parent/Student Portal approximately one week before payment is due. To avoid autopay, you may log into your Parent/Student Portal and make your own payment early. Otherwise, HRCA will process payments on the 1st. Because we are already offering this at a low price, we do not have any sibling discounts available. We only charge Scholarship families their Annual Registration Fee and co-pay amount.
HRCA works hard to ensure that our tuition and fees are among the lowest of educational and sports offerings while also providing quality staff and programming. We know homeschooling can be expensive, and HRCA has some of the lowest activity rates available! We have limited financial assistance available, including payment plans, scholarships, and waivers, reserved for students with true financial need. If this applies to you, or you just need a monthly payment plan for tuition, please complete our Financial Assistance Application HERE. Needs-based financial aid may be available through our Joan H. Schlich Memorial Scholarship Fund. We are subject to limited funding, but we strive to turn no child away for inability to pay. Tuition is not charged for your class until your scholarship application is processed and a co-pay (if any) is determined.
The deadline for Winter session financial assistance applications is December 20th. If there are extenuating circumstances, please let us know.
